Make Me a Blessing - Memories of my Aunt Mae

Flavius B. Hall, Jr.

Make Me a Blessing - Memories of my Aunt Mae is everyone’s loving story of how a family member can be a strong and continual influence on another’s life. Lila Mae Holland, my mother’s sister taught me how to observe daily life happenings, to believe in my dreams and hopes, and most importantly for me to examine my relationship with God and with others. This continuing reflection offered insights that I could never have reached on my own. Aunt Mae shared her guidance, her stories, her songs, and especially her Christian love. As she revealed her humility, kindness, and caring, I discovered the inner struggles and hardships she endured. The story reveals my memories of growing up in the 1950s and 60s in New Bern and the summer holiday visits to Swansboro and Atlantic Beach, and the loving nurturing Aunt Mae and all my family demonstrated that assisted in shaping my life.

Every child at some point in his/her life struggles with the feelings of not “fitting-in” to the social setting, family life, the academic environment, sports events, or the current standards of appearance. But Aunt Mae by her humble, compassionate example guided me in realizing that “fitting-in” was only important as it related to “making yourself a blessing for God.” Aunt Mae’s constant theme and message was stated simply through the beautiful hymn, “Make Me a Blessing to Someone Today”.

Make Me a Blessing to Someone Today

“Out in the highways and byways of life,
Many are weary and sad;
Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife,
Making the sorrowing glad.
Make me a blessing,
Make me a blessing,
Out of my life
May Jesus shine.
Make me a blessing,
O Saviour, I pray,
Make me a blessing
To someone today”
